Course Details

If English is not your first language, this subject-specific international foundation year will give you the necessary English language ability and expertise to study an undergraduate degree in law and social sciences within UK higher education.

You will gain an understanding of British culture and universities, and you will work on your intercultural communication, maths, research and study skills. You will also become more aware of the requirements of studying at a UK university, helping you to be more successful and confident on your chosen undergraduate degree.

This pathway will prepare you for study on our law and social sciences courses.

The law aspects of the module will:

  • Examine the law-making process, review court structure and the passage of an Act through Parliament
  • Identify key legal personnelincluding solicitors, barristers, legal executives and judges
  • Review the differences between criminal and civil law
  • Include a visit to Leeds Combined Court Centre to see law in practice.

The social sciences aspects of the module will:

  • Introduce you to the distinction between positive and normative theory
  • Examine how social science theory can be used to explore questions of state authority, legitimacy and obligation
  • Explore the social context of the administration of law and systems of justice in an unequal society
  • Enable you to participate in class debates to develop your use of theories and evidence.

You might study some parts of the course with British students, while other sessions will be with fellow international students. The teaching on this course is British Council accredited.

On completion of this course, you will automatically progress to study on an undergraduate degree in your chosen subject area. You will also be awarded a Foundation Certificate. As such, this course is the first year of a four year integrated degree programme*.

*Applicants requiring a Tier 4 Student Visa will not be eligible for an integrated offer and will require a separate CAS for progression to their undergraduate course.
